STgenetics® testing all bull semen samples for H5N1

Over recent months, numerous dairies nationwide have grappled with Avian Flu infections in lactating cows. The virus found in lactating dairy cows has been identified as a subtype of Avian Influenza Virus Type A H5N1. Because morbidity and mortality rates in cattle are relatively low compared to birds, the American Association of Bovine Practitioners has recommended designating the virus as Bovine Influenza A Virus (BIAV).

As our industry endeavors to deepen its understanding of BIAV infections and their impacts, it is crucial that we educate ourselves on their effects on cattle and collaborate to contain the outbreak. We encourage you to connect with fellow dairy farmers and veterinarians who have encountered the virus in their herds. We are also prepared to share various publications on the subject.

Although the virus has not been detected in semen or reproductive tissues, out of an abundance of caution and with a commitment to safeguarding our collective future, STgenetics® has opted to subject all semen batches to Influenza A testing via RT-qPCR. This test, recognized as the gold standard for identifying influenza viruses, including Avian Influenza A H5N1 and the BIAV variant, ensures that only semen batches testing negative for Influenza A are released from STgenetics® for commercial distribution.

This rigorous testing protocol not only provides assurance to us and our customers regarding the safety of STgenetics® semen products but also underscores our shared dedication to the well-being of their cows. Furthermore, it instills confidence in our consumers that the dairy industry remains steadfast in delivering wholesome and nutritious dairy products for their families to enjoy.
