The virus found in lactating dairy cows has been identified as a subtype of Avian Influenza Virus Type A H5N1. Because morbidity and mortality rates in cattle are relatively low compared to birds, the American Association of Bovine Practitioners has recommended designating the virus as Bovine Influenza A Virus (BIAV).

Although the virus has not been detected in semen or reproductive tissues, out of an abundance of caution and with a commitment to safeguarding our collective future, STgenetics® has opted to subject all semen batches to Influenza A testing via RT-qPCR. This test, recognized as the gold standard for identifying influenza viruses, including Avian Influenza A H5N1 and the BIAV variant, ensures that only semen batches testing negative for Influenza A are released from STgenetics® for commercial distribution.
